Lisa’s Journey

My passion for financial planning started when I moved to New York City after the Peace Corps to live with my then-girlfriend (now wife) with only $900 in my bank account and massive student loans. I had grown up with just my mom and we got by each month on very little. I got my first job at 16 and thought I had learned to budget and save for the things I wanted. Yet, here I was.

I took the best paying job I could find, which was working as an equity analyst at an investment bank. For three years, I learned a ton about market risk and communicating with smart people. I also became the friend who encouraged everyone to put money into that retirement fund at work and helped out at tax time.

I went to law school because I believe we each have a role in building an inclusive and educated society. There, I became well-versed in constitutional law and taxes. I also had the privilege of teaching civics at an alternative high school. This sparked something in me, and I have been teaching ever since.

In 2014, my wife and I moved to Southern California to be closer to family. I went from a five-minute bike commute to a long drive. Along the freeway, I learned that what I care most about is helping people find their power.
